The volunteers at 209 Cheer and Dance are hosting a special one-day, two-part event on Saturday, February 9, 2013, for 100 youth participants, ages 5-14.  The cost is $35.00 per participant and entries are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.  Each participant will attend a 4-hour dance clinic at 4203 Coronado Avenue, Suite 1, Stockton, California from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to learn a halftime routine.  They will meet at the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, California from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to perform at the UOP Women’s Basketball vs. UC Santa Barbara halftime.  Participants must attend both the clinic and the game.  Each participant will be provided with a performance T-shirt, a hair bow, and free entry into the game.  The registration deadline is Wednesday, January 16, 2013.  To request a registration packet, please email 209cheeranddance@gmail.com.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to Destiny Herrera, a 9-year-old girl from Manteca, California, to help defray the cost of her medical treatment and travel expenses to and from the hospital.  Destiny’s ultimate passion is dance.  She has been competing since the age of 3 and has spent many nights and weekends practicing and performing.  She is also a former cheerleader.  Destiny began having persistent pain in her leg and knee which doctors initially believed to be strain related to the considerable amount of dancing she was doing and suggested that she stay off of her knees during dance class. She soon developed a cyst on her outer knee that had to be surgically removed. Upon further testing, it was discovered that the cyst was a sign of cancer. She was ultimately diagnosed with stage 3 Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. Destiny is currently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy 5 to 6 times per week.  Her prognosis is unknown at this time.

Beyond dancing, Destiny loves fashion design and enjoys making clothes for her Barbies.  Her favorite colors are turquoise and hot pink.  She is also a big sister with one brother.  Destiny really wants for people around her to be happy, and she does not want her illness to make anyone sad.  She often uses the phrase "I'm kicking cancer's butt" no matter what symptoms she's experiencing. She ALWAYS has a smile on her face. Her most notable traits are her smile and her consideration for others.  Her loved ones describe her as a gentle soul with amazing courage and faith that God will pull her through this battle.
