Holiday tradition continues

Enjoy Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, "The Nutcracker" this holiday season. Capitol Ballet Company and Stockton Ballet School will be presenting this classic this December.

Performances will be in both Stockton and Sacramento.

The Stockton show will be on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at San Joaquin Delta College, 5151 Pacific Avenue in Stockton. Ticket Box Office number is 209-954-5110.

The Sacramento show will be on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. at Sheldon High School, 8333 Kingsbridge Drive, Sacramento, CA 95829. Ticket Box Office number is 916-484-1188.

City of Stockton Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony

Stockton, Calif.  - The City of Stockton will hold its annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. Councilmember Elbert Holman will light the tree for the entire community, while members of the Cesar Chavez High School Honors Choir perform, under the direction of Mel Suguitan.The ceremony will take place at Weber Point Event Center, which is located at Center Street and Miner Avenue.

Immediately following the tree lighting ceremony, Marina West Yacht Club’s Delta Reflections 33rd Annual Lighted Boat Parade arrives in downtown Stockton at 6:00 p.m., proceeding down the Channel and turning around at McLeod Lake, on the north side of Weber Point. For additional information about the lighted boat parade, please visit mwyc.org.

Families are encouraged to visit downtown Stockton to enjoy these holiday traditions.

The 8th annual Run and Walk Against Hunger, Thanksgiving morning, November 22 is expected to draw 4,000 participants to the Stockton Ports Baseball Park, Fremont and Lincoln Streets in downtown Stockton.

United Way partners with the San Joaquin County Fair

The San Joaquin County Fair announces a new community partnership with the largest non-profit organization in the county, the United Way of San Joaquin.  Andy Prokop, CEO, states, “Our United Way is proud to partner with the dedicated community leaders who serve as the Board of Directors for the San Joaquin County Fair. We are especially excited to work with Kate Post, as she continues to help us by creating an opportunity to raise new funds during the Fair.”  Corporations such as McDonald’s, General Mills, Humana, Chevron, The New Stockton 99 Speedway, Pepsi, Chase Chevrolet, and the Downtown Stockton Alliance will be providing a limited number of giveaways at the entrance gates during Fair dates Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23 and Thursday, September 27 through Sunday, September 30.

San Joaquin County Fair opens Thursday, Sept. 20

“The Magic is Back!” at the San Joaquin County Fair to be held September 20-30, 2012.   The 153rd Annual Fair is one of only six (6) horseracing fairs in California and will showcase eight (8) days of horseracing and fair fun!

The Fair will run each week Thursday through Sunday with a full schedule of horseracing, exhibits, food, carnival, concerts, nightly fireworks and much more. The buildings will house new exhibits including, Canstruction by the Emergency Food Bank, photo displays and contests, Italian chalk painting and Ag Mechanics.

The fairgrounds has had a complete makeover with grandstand, livestock barns and all the fairgrounds buildings sporting fresh coats of paint with some adorned with handpainted historical murals from Bank of Stockton archives and the Port of Stockton.  The north wall of the Grandstand boasts racing horses and jockeys sponsored by Bank of Agriculture and Commerce.

Hunger Solutions Summit is Friday, September 21

The community is invited to attend the “Hunger Solutions Summit”, Sept. 21, 8:30 AM – 3:00 PM at the Robert Cabral Agricultural Center, 2101 E. Earhart Road, Stockton, CA (just north of Stockton Metro Airport, off Arch-Airport Road).

Sponsored by the Hunger Task Force for San Joaquin County, the Summit will offer an overview of Task Force successes in ending hunger and food insecurity in the county over the last five years and the ongoing challenges faced by county residents.  Keynote Speaker George Manolo-LeClair of California Food Policy Advocates will offer an overview of challenges and successful programs affecting hunger and malnutrition in California. 

The just-completed Hunger Survey of San Joaquin County will be presented by Cam Bullock of the San Joaquin Data Cooperative, and a panel of food bank clients, homeless clients and senior clients will share their own stories.
