Cirque du Soleil boosts Stockton Arena

STOCKTON, CA - The Stockton arena that often sits empty will be far from empty over the next several days.

Cirque du Soleil is staging seven performances through Sunday, offering the show "Dralion", which features an Asian influence of acrobatics, gymnastics and music.

The entertainment brings much needed business to the facility,  which is owned by the City of Stockton, but has performed poorly.

As recently as 2009, the arena lost a reported $2 million, but new management company SMG of Philadelphia, promises better results.

"There's still work to be done; mending relationships and working with promoters and agents, in showcasing Stockton," arena general manager Mike Cera said.

Because about half of the seats at the arena are unavailable for Cirque du Soleil shows because the staging takes up so much space, two of the upcoming shows are close to selling out.

Student athletes may have mandatory random drug testing

STOCKTON, CA - Late Wednesday night, Lincoln Unified School Board voted to take another step forward in the process that could lead to random drug testing for athletes at Lincoln High School in Stockton.

Parents listened to the controversial issue and debated it before school board members.

Many parents whole-heartedly supported the policy, saying that any attempt to cut down on drug use by students and to keep them safe is a worthwhile endeavor.

"I think it's a wonderful thing. The students shouldn't be doing drugs," parent Karyn Johnson said.

Johnson's daughters are on the swim team and volleyball team.

"I wish they could test every student on campus," said Johnson. "And if we can only test the athletes, then lets test the athletes."

Others, like Attorney Gary Gershon, an ACLU volunteer, consider mandatory random drug testing an invasion of privacy.
