San Joaquin County Students Excel at Spelling Bee Championship

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael, 54 seventh-, eighth- and ninth- grade students from 27 counties throughout California competed in the 2011/12 California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship.

After being named the 2011/12 San Joaquin County Junior High Spelling Bee Champion, Julie Fukunaga, eighth-grader at Elkhorn School in Lodi Unified School District, competed in the State competition, taking an impressive second-place overall. Fukunaga is no stranger to the State competition, as she in competed in the 2010/11 State Spelling Bee after being named the 2010/11 San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Champion.

The other San Joaquin County participant in the State Bee was Hanna Nakahara, eighth-grader at Delta Charter School in New Jerusalem Elementary School District, who took seventh-place.

Margaret Wang, an eighth-grade student from Marin County, was named the 2011/12 California State Junior High Spelling Bee Champion. The California State Junior High Spelling Bee Championship was coordinated by the Marin County Office of Education.

“San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) is extremely proud of both of our participants. They rose to the challenge and made our County proud,” said Annie Cunial, Coordinator of Student Events at SJCOE.
